‘It’s not a linear story about my journey and growing up - there are parts that are just advice that you can apply to what you’re going through today’ I know it’s strange to have a person who wrote a book about themselves say, “I’m a private person,” but I am, and I say in the book that nothing is anybody’s business, which is what I still believe. It was an attempt to be vulnerable and open, but I’m still a private person.

Like most of my life, I found humour in everything, and it was a bit of a balancing act in terms of how to walk that line in order to give the reader a sense of who I am. What was that balancing act like? A My two goals were to be truthful and funny. Q You get into some very personal details with the book, but at the same time, it’s not a tell-all. Plus, my mom and dad also agreed to read their own pieces for the audiobook, so if you like thick Boston accents, come on over to the audiobook. I wanted to give her perspective on what it was like to be a young mother during that time. It was interesting to hear her perspective on the ’70s, and how that generation raised women like me who were given a lot more opportunities. Was she eager to share? A My mother is a beautiful writer, and she comes from a generation of women who were over-educated and underutilized. Q Your parents contributed to the book, including some very honest bits of advice and recollections from your mother regarding postpartum depression and growing up as a young, isolated mother.

I write my books Lord of the Rings-style - three at once. I think it’s going to be a good sophomore effort. Q So you’d tackle another book, no problem? A I finished another book last night, and we’re hoping to get it to the printer this morning. Like any hard thing, once it’s over, you forget all the pain and do it again. I’m more comfortable writing in other people’s voices than my own, so there was a new soreness to this. Q Is this the most difficult project you’ve ever taken on, then? A It was a new set of muscles, for sure. I had to talk about how hard it was to actually do it. It’s rolling up your sleeves and doing it every day. There’s nothing fancy or sophisticated about writing a book.

Writing is like wrestling a bear - it’s hard, manual labour. People always ask you how your book is going, and you turn into a liar: “It’s going great!” It’s the worst question you can hear. I like writers who do that, who take you on the journey with them.

A I was interested in showing my work, peeking behind the curtain and demystifying the process a bit. Q You bring up the struggle of actually writing the book quite a bit. I didn’t have one vision of who the person was, but my job was more to figure out who the person writing it was - and that was me.

So I was hoping the book would speak to a lot of people. I was writing from a perspective of a person who was in the middle of her life, and busy in all kinds of ways, yet not quite ready to luxuriate in a state like, “Ah, this is where I am now.” I was sort of speaking as that person, but what I found is that any time you get really specific and honest, things feel universal. Q Did you have a certain type of reader in mind while writing this? A I did and I didn’t. During a book-tour stop in Toronto, the former Saturday Night Live star spoke with the Post’s Barry Hertz about the struggles of writing, the future of alt-comedy and the fine balancing act it takes to blend with the personal with the universal. It’s also the latest step in Poehler’s seeming plan for comedy-world domination, as the 43-year-old prepares to wrap up her sitcom Parks and Recreation and expand her producing duties (including the zeitgeist-y Broad City). Part autobiography, part advice guide and part history of the alternative-comedy movement, Amy Poehler’s Yes Please is a solid rebuke to the traditional memoirs that crop up on shelves this time of year.
